Ahilyabai Holkar:The queen who made her story

As the holy month of Sawan is coming to an end, we celebrate the courage and leadership of Ahilyabai Holkar who got the Kashi Vishwanath temple reconstructed in 1777. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is one of the most significant sites in Varanasi, especially during Sawan.

We are dedicating the last Monday of Sawan to the Queen Ahilyabai Holkar! She has etched her name in history at a time when women were restricted to domestic roles. She led the renovation of several sacred Hindu temples and one of the most prominent ghats in Varanasi is rightfully named after her, which conveys how invaluable she was.

Channeling Ahilyabai Holkar’s spirit today! She inspired the traditional weave in Maheshwar by inviting craftsmen from Surat and Malwa to design exclusive sarees for gifting to the visitors of the royal palace.
